This is a good school The headteacher, ably supported by the deputy headteacher, is tenacious about ensuring that all pupils achieve the best outcomes.
Strong leadership, with good support from the local governing body and Academies Enterprise Trust, has driven improvement. Senior leaders have used professional development successfully to develop the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. Determined actions by the headteacher and deputy headteacher are having a positive effect.
As a result, almost all pupils are making good progress. Teachers use questioning effectively to challenge and deepen pupils' thinking. Whole-school approaches to the teaching of... reading and mathematics are beginning to have a strong impact on pupils' outcomes.
Teachers' expectations of spelling, grammar, handwriting and presentation are sometimes too low, especially in key stage 1. Children in early years make good progress. Most children are ready for Year 1 by the time they finish their Reception Year.
However, too few children exceed a good level of development. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) make good progress. Leaders assess pupils' learning in detail and plan work which matches their needs and abilities.
The pupil premium funding is used successfully to provide support and extra teaching for disadvantaged pupils. Pupils behave well around school and in classrooms. Pupils understand the school's behaviour approaches and staff apply these consistently.
A strong culture of safeguarding exists throughout the school. Procedures for keeping pupils safe are secure and clear. The pastoral support for pupils is a high priority for leaders.
Middle leaders are beginning to improve the quality of the wider curriculum, ensuring that it is broad and balanced. However, they have yet to monitor and evaluate the impact of their actions. Pupils' absence remains higher than the national average.
However, attendance is improving and actions to reduce persistent absence are having a positive effect.
